Terdapat beberapa jenis adverbs diantaranya adalah manner, degree, time, cause/purpose, dan assertion. Pengelompokan ini dapat dilihat dengan menjawab pertanyaan how?, how much?, when?, why?, true atau false? pada kalimat tersebut.
Adverbs of manner merupakan kata keterangan cara untuk menjawab pertanyaan how?.
Examples:
- He works carefully.
- Ruth cooks well.
Adverbs of degree merupakan kata keterangan tingkat/derajat untuk menjawab pertanyan when?.
Perhatikan kalimat berikut:
- You are inadequately prepared for graduate studies.
- He has completely exhausted his inheritance.
Adverbs of time merupakan kata keterangan waktu untuk menjawab pertanyaan when?.
Perhatikan kalimat
berikut:
- They arrive late for most appointments.
- She has not played tennis recently.
Adverbs of place merupakan kata keterangan tempat untuk menjawab pertanyaan where?.
Perhatikan kalimat berikut:
- He walked downstairs.
- They went south for the winter.
Adverbs of cause or purpose merupakan kata keterangan sebab atau tujuan untuk menjawab pertanyaan why?.
Perhatikan kalimat
berikut:
- I will therefore quit the team.
- She will consequently be dismissed.
Adverbs
of assertion merupakan kata keterangan penegasan untuk menjawab pertanyaan true/false?.
Perhatikan kalimat
berikut:
- She will surely be hired for the job.
- She is not acceptable in my home.
