Umumnya adverbs merupakan adjectives yang berakhiran/prefix –ly. Namun perlu diingat bahwa beberapa adjectives juga berakhiran -ly. Perbedaan antara adjectives dengan adverbs yang berakhiran –ly adalah dengan melihat fungsinya dalam kalimat. Adjectives hanya menjelaskan nouns dan pronouns, sedangkan adverbs menjelaskan selain nouns dan pronouns.
Perhatikan kalimat
berikut:
- I opened the door slowly.
- I understand you perfectly.
- A comely appearance is always admired.
- The early bird catches the worm.
- The trainer was a surly one, all right.
(Kata slowly dan perfectly merupakan adverbs karena menjelaskan kata opened dan understand sebagai verbs. Kata comely dan early merupakan adjectives karena menjelaskan appearances dan bird sebagai nouns. Pada kalimat terakhir, surely merupakan adjective karena menjelaskan one sebagai pronoun.)
