To Do/Does/Did

Sebagai main verbs pada transitive sentence, do/does/did memiliki makna melakukan sesuatu.  Sebagai auxiliary verb,   do/does/did dapat digunakan untuk bentuk kalimat negative atau question. Perhatikan daftar berikut:

Subject                              Present Tense        Past Tense

I                                         do                          did

you, we, they                     do                          did

she, he, it                           does                       did

our friends (plural)            do                          did

her mother (singular)        does                       did

etc…

Do/does/did  berfungsi sebagai auxiliary verbs ketika main verbs dalam bentuk negative atau interrogative (kalimat tanya). Kata-kata ini memberikan penegasan pada main verb dalam kalimat.

Perhatikan kalimat berikut:

  • He does not smoke or drink.
  • Did you come yesterday?
  • Robert and Jim do not join us.
  • She did not make her task last week.

(Kata smoke, come, join dan make merupakan main verb dalam kalimat. Maka kata does not, did, do not dan did not merupakan auxiliary verb yang memberikan penegasan pada main verb di atas. Do/does/did+not menandakan kalimat tersebut negatif. Maka frasa di atas dapat diterjemahkan does not smoke: tidak merokok, do not join: tidak bergabung, did not make: tidak membuat. Biasa do/does/did+not disingkat dengan don’t/doesn’t/didn’t. Sedangkan  do/does/did di awal kalimat tanya dapat diterjemahkan dengan apakah. Did you come yesterday? diterjemahkan dengan: Apakah kamu datang kemaren?)

Do/does/did  digunakan sebagai transitive verbs yang bermakna melakukan.

Perhatikan kalimat berikut:

  • I did my homework last night.
  • I have done it.
  • Mr. Wahid does this proposal professionally.

(Kata did, done, dan does dalam kalimat di atas merupakan transitive verb. Dalam kalimat ini kata do/does/did dapat diartikan dengan melakukan atau membuat).
